At this weeks meeting, we had a guest artist Steve Williams who took us through a watercolour workshop of a water/woodland scene. He started by doing a very rough outline in pencil of the scene. He then put in the sky with a very weak mix of cerulean blue, followed by a slightly stronger mix of the same colour for the distant mountains. When this was dry he put in some distant treas with a very weak burnt umber then bringing it closer with a slightly stronger burnt umber with a touch of Vermilion ( a snoopy’s nose worth as Steve calls it ), and then further forward with a stronger mix for the nearer shrubland. When dry, closer trees were added using a weak light green for trees in the distance The taller trees were then added, first the trunks with a light brown then using a mix of light and darker greens with a stippled brush he added the leaves.
The rocks were added with a mix of burned umber darkened with some ultramarine, this was applied and while still damp, scraped off with a palette knife to give the rough rocky appearance. The water reflections were added using a mix of the colours used in the background and foreground. A touch of white paint was used on the water to give highlights. Finally, a little detail was added to the tree trunks to give the appearance of the light coming from the left.
